Let's Change the Constitution!... Wait, Nevermind

Donald Trump is arguing against himself.
While speaking at Franklin, Tennessee on Saturday, Trump addressed the shooting that took several lives at Roseburg, Oregon. Contrasting with the liberals that call for increased gun control, Trump advocated for gun rights and strongly supported self-defense: "The Second Amendment to our Constitution is clear. The right of the people to keep and bear Arms shall not be infringed upon. Period."
Is not the Fourteenth Amendment to our Constitution clear as well? If we take Trump's argument and point it towards his views on immigration, it tears down the foundation of his reasoning for gun rights. He wants to possibly change the Fourteenth Amendment that guarantees birthright citizenship because it allows people to immigrate illegally, have a child, and stay in the U. S. anchored by their baby. However, when it comes to the Second Amendment, suddenly the Constitution is something that should never be changed.
Trump would argue that times are changing and that the legislators of the Fourteenth Amendment did not foresee this abuse of Constitutional rights. But we can also say that our Founding Fathers did not foresee this gun crisis and addiction to shooting. Yes, times are changing, Mr. Trump. And that's exactly why something has to be done about these wretched guns.

Side note: If there were teachers at Townsend walking around with guns in their pockets, I would be pretty scared and paranoid. Being at school (basically a prison in Trump's fantasies) would be dreadful...

  1. I would agree with you Mr. Wong that increased Gun Control is drastically needed. For too many gratuitous and horrific shootings have exponentially increased in our recent years, for a myriad of factors. I believe that there should be a required background check in all states to ensure that those who are in possession of a firearm are doing so for practical reasons, such as Self-Defense.

  2. If there had been more teachers wielding weapons during the time of he shooting, this would have only increased the number of deaths as there would have been more bullets fired and ricocheting off the walls of the building, ultimately hitting innocent students and teachers who do not wield guns. Mr Trump's ignorance of the danger of having a concealed weapon goes as far as using mass shootings as the reason for keeping the second amendment the way it is. I believe Mr. Trump has completely overlooked the fact that these weapons would be concealed during school hours on a daily basis. Not only would this be detrimental to a student's focus on their education, as they would sit in a classroom with the fear of the teacher being able to pull the trigger at any given moment, but also there is a chance of a weapon being stolen if it is not concealed properly. This would endanger the lives of the entire student body as well as the authorities because a child holding a gun poses a threat that there will be a chance the child will go on their own shooting spree within the school.

I am in agreement with Mr. Trump when he says "It's not a question of the laws, it's really the people" to the extent that, yes, people are at fault; however, if the law increased regulation of gun control, it would decrease the amount of people who can wield a gun as their mental health would be a fact in a say whether they can obtain a gun permit or not. Of course there are people you cannot stop, but these same people can get background checks so that an attempt is made to stop them from harming innocent people.

  4. I agree that teachers carrying guns would make the entire school atmosphere tense and uneasy. Donald Trump had also previously stated in response to the Oregon shooting (if you read Zion's blog post), "that's the way the world works." Someone who speaks as if he is almost dismissing this issue as something that just occurs a lot and can't be helped, I can't see sincere effort in his plan to resolve this situation.

It is also obvious that Donald Trump will rely on the Constitution on certain decisions to back up his reasoning, and at other times, criticize the constitution when it goes against his plans. He does seem to, as you mentioned, not be consistent in his way of working with the constitution. So, he seems to think that the rights to bear arms is the right way to solve this issue without thinking of the consequences to BOTH possible solutions. He doesn't think about whether teachers carrying guns in schools might face theft of the guns by students or how it gives people easier access to guns. All you have to do is to mug a teacher on his way home...This also may create a chaotic gun shooting war with the shooter that may cause more harm than good. I think Donald Trump needs to back up his beliefs by saying that it will make people feel and be safe...not backing up his reasoning by saying that it is a right stated in the Constitution. He was already seen going against one amendment, so he is in some way saying that he gets to decide what's good and bad, and instead of him needing to match up to the documents stabilizing this country, Trump seems to demand that they match up to him. So, you can already see what kind of ruling awaits us with his presidency...that is, if he actually becomes one.........
