Jeb Bush: "Stuff Happens" --> "Sorry, Things** Happen"

Jeb Bush was heavily criticized and received a lot of backlash for his "stuff happens" in response to the Oregon shooting that took place several days ago. While he and his supporters may feel like others have taken this comment out of context, I believe that he is in fact being very casual about it - it being gun regulation.

While the 2nd amendment gives all men the right to bear arms, it is not in the best interest for our country to be playing around with the sale of guns without strict regulation. Jeb says that "the impulse is always to do something, and it's not necessarily the right thing to do" in response to what happens after a crisis, but I say that this isn't being impulsive. We have had more mass shootings than the number of days this year alone. We are not being impulsive when demanding for greater gun control, the stats say it all. Like Obama said, this has become the norm, and it shouldn't be.

In response to spokeswoman Brandenburger, when she says that "this is a cheap attempt to advance [Democrats'] political agenda in the wake of a tragedy; taking shameless advantage of a horrible tragedy [and] only serving to prey on people's emotions", maybe Jeb should pick his words more wisely next time. People want change and change should be made; it's been a long time coming.

  1. Bush's response to the Oregon shooting incident is similar to that of Donald trump's. If this is the case, there needs to be some serious fixing up of our national political system. Do all these republican candidates fail to see that although stricter gun regulations may not prevent shootings, it is possible to reduce them. Yes, 'stuff happens', but more 'stuff' may happen if our national leaders don't make an effort to resolve them

  2. When Bush says, "the impulse is always to do something and it's not necessarily the right thing to do", it makes me question is idea of what is right? What is his definition of the "right action"? Is it wrong to want regulation of gun control after multiple mass shootings over the past couple of months? What is the ultimate point of the rights and liberties given to us if there are people who decide to take advantage of them and harm other innocent people? The "impulse" to do something will only grow if there is a repetition of a horrific event that is continuously left unresolved. It sounds great when Mr. Bush says "we ought to be more connected to the communities. Maybe we ought to have greater awareness of the mental health challenges that exist all across this country", however there are many mental heath challenges that go undetected. What happens when a gun permit is given, with no background check, to this mentally challenged individual and he goes off on a killing spree? True, passing laws may not completely prevent incidents from recurring; however with certain personal liberties being limited it serves as a precaution and as a matter of reducing the chance of repeating dangerous situations.

  3. I find it really quite absurd that stricter gun control laws weren't passed after Newtown, and so with this common occurrence of mass shootings in 2015, when will it be determined that enough is enough? After 9/11, airport regulation has been strictly enforced, so why after the death of so many children and students has the government not done anything to ensure the safety of its people? The second amendment is so often quoted by gun collectors or red-blooded Americans to be a human right assigned by the Founding Fathers of our nation. But our nation has evolved past the time where we need a gun in the house to ensure our safety. Bush's careless statement reflected negatively upon himself, not because Democrats are taking advantage of a tragedy, but because said tragedy occurred, and the Republican candidates are nonchalant. They speak merely words on how these things tragic things happen in life, and we as a nation will rally against it and show our strength. But what if preventative measures could be taken, wouldn't that be for the better? However hard it may be, it's time for the Constitution to be amended, and access to firearms be strictly regulated.
