John Kasich on Social Security cuts: 'Get over it'

After Kasich has mentioned that there should be cuts in the social security program, he has received many negative views on his perspective from the democrats. He proceeds by asking everyone in the room if they are near getting their social security benefits and if they cared if it was lowered for there to be more money in the budget. Only one person had a problem with it and he responded with, "you'll get over it."

I am very indecisive about the idea of having social security. The reason I do not fully support it is because it is said to become bankrupt soon. The fact that it will become bankrupt before I will be able to receive it makes me feel it is unnecessary to have. Why should we be paying for social security when we will not even be able to receive any later on in life? The whole idea of it takes too much from the people. The younger generation should not be having to pay it at all if they are already paying enough taxes.

  1. The response "you'll get over it" seems quite insensitive to me. I understand the various stances on social security and the conflicts along with them. Personally I think social security is important and although it does take our money from the younger generation much of the older generation relies completely on it and could not support themselves without it. It's not something we you can just "get over" if cuts are made to the budget. Many people will suffer from these cuts and that remark was harsh for this topic.

  2. I do agree that social security is very beneficial to some people but there are many flaws to the system. Ever since the baby boom, social security has shown that it cannot stay long term. With a growing American population, taxes will have to increase to support this program which makes the system unreasonable to maintain. Soon Americans will be able to support themselves with the tax money that they put into Social Security. Many Americans don't even need the money contrasting to when the program first started during the Great Depression when almost everyone needed it. The system should be reformed but cuts may not be the answer.

  3. To me, it feels like social security is good in theory, but hard to get right in practice. It is very beneficial to those who are unable to work, and those who are very poor. However, there are many flaws to the system such as sustainability of the system. We need to find a way to reform the system so that it can still help those who need it. However, I have to disagree with Kasich's statements. I do not believe that social security cuts are the answers to its problems, and I also believe that his statement of "you'll get over it" is also very rude. The older generation who needs this system to have a stable life for their remaining years will suffer as a result of these cuts, and saying "you'll get over it" is the equivalent of saying "too bad we can't help, so do it yourself."

  4. I feel like we shouldn't need to pay for social security when it will be bankrupt soon anyway. The government should be doing in this case through policies, and the part of 'you'll get over it' is insensitive. There should be a better solution then tax cuts.
