Donald Trump has been leading Republican primary polls, and he still is. However Trump has been lowering in the polls. Marc Thiessen, in his article, suggests that the reason for Trump's decline in the polls is both that Trump's previously popular attacks on other candidates and anyone who bothers him is becoming less attention-grabbing and more boring, and that it is because he does not seem knowledgeable about current political happenings and doesn't seem to have actual, planned out methods to deal with the issues he talks about. This analysis of Trump seems pretty accurate. I also agree with Thiessen that even though Trump's hardcore supporters will stay with him, unless Trump suddenly starts talking knowledgeably regarding current political issues, he will continue to lose support as voters turn to support candidates who can clearly explain in detail what they talk about.

I totally agree with the article. In the last debate, I didn't feel like Trump had real solutions to the issues he brought up. I think many people felt that way as well, as Fiorina won support as Trump lost support. However, Trump still has a good amount of votes he can fall back on for now.
ReplyDeleteI also agree Trump doesn't have actual plans to support his assertion of "making America great again." At the last GOP debate, his evidence for being able to deal with political issues sprang from his overconfidence and his experience as an "honest" businessman. For example, when given the opportunity to voice his plans for dealing with foreign affairs with Putin, he merely discussed being able to sit down with Putin and talking without any detailed solutions to the problems presented. Though he is entertaining, his repetitive opinions are getting boring. His disrespectful remarks to his fellow candidates and racial bigotry further lays evidence to show his incompetence for being president. Yes, some of his steadfast supports will remain. However, U.S. citizens may be opening their eyes as the election approaches.
ReplyDeleteI don't think Trump's supporters like him because of his abundance of political knowledge in the first place. However, I agree that he'll have to become more politically aware in order to maintain this huge lead in the polls. I also agree that he is a very entertaining candidate. Perhaps he needs to sacrifice some of his entertainment value for practical and informed positions on pressing issues like foreign policy and the economy. I think that a question that the author seems to be getting at is how tired are the American people of the establishment? Are they sick of it enough to elect Trump? Right now, I still don't think our aversion toward politics is intense enough to propel a man like Trump into office. But, with this ever-growing ineffectiveness in government, who knows what will happen?
ReplyDeleteI too agree with every point that Thiessen makes in this opinion piece concerning Trump's losing appeal to the people. This makes me glad, because I do not think that Trump deserves to get that primary seat. He has never once answered a question with a straight detailed answer, and he is not in the right position to be running for president because he has no experience in dealing with politics. But I guess that's why he's been appealing to so many people, because they are tired of the way government has been run - this seems to answer the question as to why the 3 GOP front runners are not politicians. Referring back to the article, Trump is an entertainer and all talk with no substance; the American people are getting tired of it.
ReplyDeleteI think this also reveals a lot about what the American people care about in the election. The very fact that they are supporting a candidate that has not proved to be well prepared or knowledgeable enough to tackle the major problems that continue to plague our nations speaks to the lack of trust we have in other politicians who have established themselves as educated individuals and even the lack of interest we have in actual issues of the government. I'm glad that the polIs are showing that support for Trump is starting to dwindle. I think it is about time the American people show themselves to be wiser than the polls have suggested of late -- that they are not willing to sacrifice the seat in the White House for cheap entertainment.
ReplyDeleteI think the American people had a fascination with Trump at the beginning but now his support is dwindling as voting day is approaching. It is good that his polling drop because we need someone in office who acutually has plans and is going to get something done . Trump saying I have plans but I'm not going to disclose it to you is not enough for the people to vote for him and I completely stand by that choice.
ReplyDeleteI feel that Trump is being supported only because the idea of such a change in government excites people that there will be a new America. Everyone is used to having someone in office that makes all of these empty promises and having Trump come up with so many extraneous ideas just gives light to a new government. I feel like even if this were true, his ideas are too ideal and costly. To deport so many immigrants a day and spend 2 billion dollars on that is just absurd. The only idea I have agreed with Trump is the fact that illegal immigrants children are legal at birth and now under the governments care. He has no experience and no idea what he would actually do in office and his dropping in the polls is just a sign that now everyone is slowly coming to realize this.
