This article discusses both Bernie Sanders' reaction to Obama wanting to slightly increase our military presence in Syria and his views on international affairs. Obama wants to deploy a few troops in the Middle East while also expressing concern of our involvement in the Syrian civil war. Sanders, just like Obama, wants to aid those countries battling the Islamic State in the region. However, he does not believe military force should be our first resort, but rather our last. There are ways to address international affairs that don't involve dispatching troops.
I agree with Sanders. Our long history of involving ourselves in foreign conflict through military action has not been beneficial. We have lost countless Americans to the Iraq War, and to what avail? We returned 3 years later in the Iraqi Civil War. There are more diplomatic ways to address conflict rather than perpetuating ongoing strife in these countries. Furthermore, it is important that we focus on the issues of our own country before trying, and failing, to solve issues in others. As Bernie stated, military force should be our last resort and we should not completely immerse ourselves in foreign affairs.

I disagree for the most part on Sanders' view. What is going on in Syria offers no diplomatic resolution; who's willing to sit down with ISIS to discuss terms of ceasefire? Instead, I think what President Obama plans to do is more of a realistic option. Because ISIS killed American citizens, the US should be sending troops in to avenge them. Although the US should not be involved in the turmoil, I think that it is inevitable that we will have some military presence there if just to combat ISIS.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Sanders on resorting to violence as the last resort because American military involvement in foreign affairs has not helped anyone. It doesn't help us because American troops are constantly dying and we as Americans have pay for the war instead of using that money to pay for our own problems. In addition, the countries that we are trying to help, aren't even grateful for us helping them and instead think that we are being intrusive. So, I think we should avoid sending our military troops to foreign countries at all cost.
ReplyDeleteWe should deploy more soldiers into Syria. One it gives people jobs. War helps boost economy. If we continue to entangle ourselves in foreign affairs our economy will continue to grow. I think this goes beyond lives because soldiers sign themselves up to give up their lives for our country.
ReplyDeleteI think that Obama is right to send troops into Syria because the growing presence of other forces that are attacking innocent civilians (U.S civilians included) calls for it. If we do not act who knows how big of a threat these forces may cause? Dispatching of troops should be the last option, but what other options are there if we can't reach out to compromise?
