From Donald Trump, Hints of Campaign Exit Strategy
According to this article, Maggie Haberman suggests Trump has been hinting that he would drop out of the elections with decreasing numbers in the polls and recent interviews. He has said that if he was doing poorly, he would go back to being the honest businessman that he is. His numbers have been declining and he hasn't been spending much on his campaign, but the article does not address the counterargument well as it provides evidence that Trump will very well keep his bid and and is in the election to win. He is still at the top of the polls and isn't spending the large sum of money the other candidates are spending because he gets enough media coverage, making additional costs unnecessary.
I'm unsure whether or not Trump will win, but after long months of campaigning, rallying, and attending the GOP debate solidifies his bid for presidency. As he has repeatedly stated, "Trump is not a loser," and I doubt that he will quit now, especially since he is still at the top of the polls. The quote used in the beginning of the article, "If I were doing poorly, if I saw myself going down, if you would stop calling me because you no longer have any interest in Trump because 'he has no chance,' I'd go back to my business" merely suggests that he would drop out if he was doing poorly in the current elections. However, he is not doing poorly at all and has a real chance at winning in primaries, given his numbers in national polls. He is merely suggesting an exit strategy if his chances were significantly dwindling, but they aren't. Trump is here to stay.

I agree with Simran that Trump is unlikely to back out. He would be showing weakness and loss of confidence which is not what anyone would rationally want to do especially when you are leading the polls. However, by discussing an exit strategy should soften the fall especially if Trump loses support in the near future. Then Trump will be seen as just someone who follows their word. It is still highly unlikely that Trump can secure the nomination though. There is still so much time left and as we read in class, the political elite would be hard pressed to nominate someone from outside the establishment. I don't think that Trump will drop out but I don't think that he will win either
ReplyDeleteThere's no way Trump is dropping out. I think he has a huge ego and if dropping out means hurting that precious ego, there's no chance he's doing it. Either way, Trump is doing spectacular in the polls and he'd be out of his mind to throw all of that away. Trump might not take the nomination this election day, but he'll be sure to stay and entertain us Americans.
ReplyDeleteI also agree that it is highly unlikely for Trump to drop out of the race at this point in the election. His numbers are dropping, yes, but he is still topping the polls and for him to drop out would be foolish, considering everything he has already said and done. He said he would drop out if he had no chance. Clearly this is no longer the case based on the poll numbers and media discussion alone. As Trump insists he is not a "loser", I'm sure he'd rather not see "Trump is a quitter" breaking the headlines.
ReplyDeleteBeing the brash person he is, trump is definitely not dropping out. The fact that trump is still leading the national GOP polls is scary; the thought of having such a "honest" businessman be our president is even scarier.
ReplyDeleteLike everyone else, I don't think Trump will be dropping out of the race. However, unlike everyone else, I think that if Trump was low in the polls he would definitely drop out. If he would be low in the polls there would be no reason for him to continue, and I think that it would hurt his ego more to stay in a race he is losing than to just drop out. I don't think that he will get low enough in the polls for that to happen though.
ReplyDeleteI think as more and more people realize how increasingly dysfunctional our current political system is, Trump's numbers will rise again. However, there also needs to be more effort on his end to show the American people he has real plans. If his numbers do continue to decrease, I think he will drop out. His pride seems to be the most important thing to him, and I don't think he can stomach losing to another candidate.
ReplyDeleteThis is another strategy for Trump to have American's look at his Republican poll numbers. It's another stunt for us to realize how high his voting numbers are. Trump knows how to work the media and this shows that he is here to stay. Trump's numbers are official, and I agree with your stance in his election position.
ReplyDeleteI agree I do not think Trump will just drop out for decreasing poll numbers. I feel that he will be unaffected by statistics and will still be confident in the election and that he would win. Trump has devoted too much of his time and effort into this race and I feel he is feeding off of the fame. He knows how to grab the attention of everyone without having to pay for the media coverage. He is a man of the people and gives everyone a show and would not build up to such a point just to quit on it all.
