Trump argues that if the teachers had been armed at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Oregon the situation would not have been so tragic.
He says in an interview, "By the way, it was a gun-free zone." "Let me tell you, if you had a couple teachers with guns in that room, you would have been a hell of a lot better off." Trump is a strong advocate for gun-rights and even admits to having his own gun license in New York. He argues that permits should be valid in all 50 states and wants to expand the right to carry he also wishes to see an end to all gun-free zones.

I don't think that letting teachers own guns is the solution to stop school shootings. In fact I think it will make the school environment more dangerous and tense as I wouldn't want my teachers owning a gun. The classroom would be run by fear rather the genuine interest to learn.
ReplyDeleteI don't believe that having armed teachers would have changed anything because there is a big difference between owning a gun, knowing how it works and actually shooting a person. At many college campuses there is armed security that could prevent violence on campus. These people had background checks and are trained to protect students. Rather than having armed teachers there can be a trained security presence on campus. Even the knowledge that there is security on campus could cause people to think twice before harming others.
ReplyDeleteI agree that mental health issues are also part of the problem of mass gun shootings, but I disagree when Trump says that this isn't also a gun problem. If the shooters had been unable to obtain a gun or any other firearm, it may have been able to prevent such deadly shootings. I also don't believe that having teachers own guns would be the way for change. If teachers carried guns around the school, I also agree with what Marcy said, that it will be difficult to relax and learn comfortably in class.
ReplyDeletei do not agree with the reasoning behind getting rid of gun free zones. These zones help to ensure that people are safe. In this case, I think that the security behind these zones should be checking and enforcing this ban on guns. Like Marcy and P. said, I also would not feel comfortable with teachers having a gun strapped to their jean strap during class.
