After cutting salaries and slashing staff positions at his Miami Headquarters, Jeb Bush has began to criticize the presidential race. Bush believes that the GOP presidential primaries have become too focused on candidates bashing each other. In a town hall in South Carolina, Mr. Bush said that if you want people to demonize others you should vote for Donald Trump. He also went on to say that he would rather not be running for the GOP nomination if this election is going to be about candidates bashing each other. I agree with what Mr. Bush has to say about the GOP presidential primaries. They cannot become too focused on candidates bashing each other because then topics such as taxing policies and immigration will not get the attention that they deserve.

The GOP presidential primaries have definitely become more focused on the personality of the candidate, rather than the policies. However, I think it was clear from the beginning that the Republican presidential primary was going to be characterized by candidates attacking one another. These personal attacks are not anything new to presidential races, especially Republican primaries. The addition of Trump in this years race has definitely sparked the candidates to run more personal campaigns, but I think it would be inaccurate to say that this "toxic tone" is something that has recently arose. Bush has been running a huge campaign and has faced attacks for the past several months. But, he is deciding to drop out now. He says that it's because he doesn't appreciate the "toxic tone" of the campaign, but I think it's because he realizes that the establishment cannot win if they cannot come together against Trump.
ReplyDeleteI 100% agree that this election has been focused too much on the offensive comments said to each other. In the GOP debates, there has been a lack of talk about policy and more of a personal attack to each person. Bringing up the wives of candidates and the bankruptcy of candidates should not affect the problems facing the US and how these men and women will handle the situation.
ReplyDeleteI agree on the fact that this election had become too focused on attacking the candidates rather than actually talking about policies. Even during the debates, you see all of the candidates making at least one snarky remark about another candidate, and some go as far as to demonize them. The election should focus mostly on the issues the people want to hear about, and not attacking others based on their facial features, religion, etc.
