Nation's largest teachers union endorses Clinton for president

The National Education Association (NEA) has endorsed Clinton for president. 75% of their 175-member board has voted for Clinton. Clinton responded to this endorsement with, “I know from personal experience that a teacher can make a profound difference in a child’s life." Not only is Sanders now being beat by the endorsement by the AFT but now the NEA. Many say this is the reason he is being beat so badly by Clinton.

Local members feel that the national leaders are taking too much power into their own decisions without taking the input of other members. There was not enough time to decide on which candidate to choose for, especially with Biden giving his voice and having Sanders as an opponent.

On a more successful note, the NEA has now strategically placed themselves in this election and brought more light and attention upon them. Many fear that after endorsing Obama and then regretting it, the same will happen if Clinton were to be elected. The NEA has previously awarded Clinton with the "Friend of Education award" in 1999 and this endorsement shows consistent support.

Clinton's beliefs have been college affordability but she has supported the common core standards. Not only that, but in the past she has tried enforcing competency tests for all teachers. If a teacher had failed this so called test, they would have to return for more training. Many were against this and there is a constant struggle between who members of this board support more, Clinton or Sanders. If Sanders was endorsed instead as many members feel he should have been, would Clinton still be on top of the polls?

I feel that the leaders in the local NEA groups should definitely have a say. It should not only be the national leaders because they are supposed to be representing the smaller local groups and by speaking without their support or input, they are leading nothing except for their own ideas and desires. I think that it is too soon to be endorsing a candidate when there is such an opposition to the decision that has been made. Even though I think that they needed more time, they should still focus on the fact that a democratic candidate must be elected for any bit of their voice to come out. The fact that they endorsed the democratic candidate in the lead right now is definitely the smarter choice no matter their views. The common core although, should definitely not be supported but college affordability is most definitely my most supported idea Clinton has supported.

  1. Despite the fame attached to the Clinton name, Hillary Clinton is not at the top of her game this election season. While many would love to see a woman president (finally), her views aren't very clear, and the media attention she's been getting isn't exactly flattering. She's facing high expectations, even if she's a front runner for the Democratic ticket. Endorsing the common core is a bad move, despite her views on making college more affordable. Ms. Clinton's issue is that she is a moderate liberal, and most of the nation wants to see drastic change in politics, not the same situation that we've been in the past eight years. Bernie Sanders on the other hand is a proudly declared liberal-some say socialist- and has the support of quite a lot of the millennial population. While the support of the NEA will certainly help Clinton, she is still on precarious footing, because the Firefighters Union just recently pulled out of endorsing her. Ms. Clinton's campaign has so far not met expectations, and so she'll need all the help she can get.

  2. The support of any education association is extremely valuable, I believe. It can sway votes of teachers, parents, and college students. It will be interesting to see whether Clinton or Sanders wins this education battle - it may turn the tables in either direction.

  3. Having a good educational system is essential for a country to prosper. A good education system allows people to succeed in life. The support of the this education association allows Hillary Clinton's campaign to get more votes. Whoever this education association decides to support may decide who will get the Democratic nominee for president.
